Lee Ufan at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Germany

21 November 2023

The first comprehensive retrospective of Lee Ufan in Germany is currently on view at Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, Berlin, comprising around 50 works from the past five decades.

The exhibition provides insight and new perspective to the work of the Korean artist, almost 50 years after his first participation in an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. Works from Lee's From Point and From Line monochrome paintings series, and continued Relatum series of sculptures, begun in 1968, display his involvement in the influential Korean Dansaekhwa and Japanese Mono-ha movements, the latter of which Lee was a founding member. In the museum’s garden, a further Relatum (1977) sculpture from the collection of the Nationalgalerie is on show for the first time in Berlin since 1985.

During its run, an artistic intervention by Lee is also installed in the Rembrandt room of the Gemäldegalerie. Lee, who repeatedly refers to European roots in his works, thus enters into a multi-layered dialogue with Rembrandt's works.
