'Carmen Herrera: The Paris Years, 1948 – 1953' Newspaper published by Lisson Gallery

7 May 2025

To celebrate the new exhibition, Carmen Herrera: The Paris Years, 1948 – 1953, a newspaper and an accompanying essay have been published to assess Carmen Herrera’s trajectory during this period.

Entitled 'International Herrera', the text by Ossian Ward (Content Director, Lisson Gallery), surveys a complex and tumultuous few years for the artist as she moved between New York, Havana and Paris, painting or showing in each location. This tangled network of travel, influence, instability and fervent creation coincided with a momentous period both for the production of art in all of the cities where she found herself – encountering everything from Geometric Abstraction to Abstract Expressionism – as well as for the historical moment the world was living – from Cuban revolution to the end of the Second World War.
