Ai Weiwei launches 'Treadmill' project at Lisson Gallery Cork Street this Mayfair Art Weekend

18 June 2021

Throughout Mayfair Art Weekend, taking place from 25 – 27 June 2021, Lisson Gallery's Cork Street will host a special project by Ai Weiwei, titled Treadmill.

Ai designed a postcard in early 2021 for submission to Firstsite’s project 'The Great Big Art Exhibition', which was consequently turned down. The postcard's front is printed with an image of a treadmill – the object sent to the artist by Julian Assange in October 2016, when Assange was taking refuge in the Embassy of Ecuador in London.

Peter Benenson, the Founder of Amnesty International, once said, “it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.”

Ai's concept for the Treadmill project was to create a postcard that could be sent to prisoners of conscience globally. Visitors are invited to collect Treadmill printed postcards from the gallery, to then send on to political prisoners.

A list of names and addresses of the prisoners, most of which come from Amnesty International, will be available here from Friday 25 June.
