'A brush with... John Akomfrah' - The Art Newspaper

6 October 2022

For the latest episode of The Art Newspaper's 'A brush with...' podcast, host Ben Luke sits down with John Akomfrah to discuss his greatest influences—from Virginia Woolf to Jackson Pollock.

Born in Accra, Ghana in 1957, Akomfrah has been based in London since he was a child. Throughout his career he has used film to explore major issues—including racial injustice, colonialist legacies, diasporic identities, migration and climate change—through a distinctive approach to memory and history.

Tune in to the episode to hear the artist discuss his discovery of Ornette Coleman’s 'Free Jazz' album, his early experiences of the Tate Gallery, his ongoing love of J.M.W’s paintings and more.
