Ideally this tapestry would float across these dirty waters to get us to Venice. It will tell you all that will happen picking up stories on the way and we will tell you salades.

This tapestry was created by Laure Prouvost in the lead-up to the artist's French Pavilion at the 58th Biennale Arte in Venice, 2019.

The artist's characteristic play with language is present in the text in which the old fashioned French expression 'On va vous raconter des salades' is mistranslated into an absurd English sentence. The actual meaning of this expression is that one is inventing stories and recounting tales. This tapestry seeks to do just that—telling you tales about the journey to Venice.

In addition to marking the announcement of the artist's representation of France at the Biennale, this tapestry and the 'way to Venice' has a secondary meaning which ties in with the theme of the pavilion itself and its film 'They Parlaient Idéale'. The film chronicles the journey of a group of dancers, musicians, and magicians who travel from Paris to Venice in a voyage which explores identity, challenges the boundaries of language, and questions the ideal of utopia. The film, exhibition, and tapestry all represent an escapist, surrealist journey towards an 'ideal' elsewhere.
