The Imperial War Museums announces commission of new site-specific work by Ai Weiwei

25 October 2019

Forming part of its 2020 programme, Imperial War Museums (IWM) has announced the commission of a new site-specific artwork by Ai Weiwei. The commission, History of Bombs, will be on display at IWM London from 2 April to 29 November 2020, as part of the Museum’s Refugees season of exhibitions, installations, live performances and events.

Ai’s takeover of IWM London’s iconic Atrium will be the first time in its history that the space will be given over in its entirety to an artist, the floor of which will be covered in a fabric decorated with illustrations of bombs. Exploring international migration, conflict as a root cause of human flow, and the relationship between the individual, society and the state, History of Bombs is a site-specific artwork that draws on the artist’s ongoing investigation into politics and power.
