Haroon Mirza unveils new site-specific installation in San Francisco

3 September 2018

The Night Journey is based on an Indian miniature painting in the Asian Art Museum's collection, 'The night journey of the Prophet Muhammad on the heavenly creature Buraq' (c. 1800). For the exhibition, Haroon Mirza has converted a pixelated version of this image into a score, or source code, which creates electrical impulses in the form of sound, light and colour. The site-specific work arises from the artist's interest in Sufi mysticism, meditation, trance music and other conscious-altering practices as alternate ways to experience the world.

Haroon Mirza: The Night Journey opens 7 September at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, and is on view through 9 December 2018. Read more about the exhibition on the museum's website.
