Exhibition on Mushrooms at Somerset House features circuit board works by Haroon Mirza

29 January 2020

On Thursday 30 January, Somerset House opens ‘Mushrooms: The Art, Design and Future of Fungi’. The exhibition celebrates the mushroom in art through the work of over 40 artists, designers and musicians, and examines fungi’s colourful cultural legacy and the promise it offers to reimagine our relationship with the planet.

Since 2016, Mirza has printed and acid-etched copper plates through various methods, including passing electrical current through psychoactive varieties of cacti and fungus known worldwide for their psychotropic qualities that rest atop the plates. In Constellations (2016) the spore prints of the psilocybe cubensis – or, Magic Mushroom – fungus are acid-etched on copper PCB blank circuit boards, the phantom-like image of the mushrooms fixed into the metal surface like a vision or half-remembered experience.

'Mushrooms: The Art, Design and Future of Fungi' runs until 26 April.
