Carmen Herrera-designed mural is completed in East Harlem

16 November 2020

A new mural designed by Carmen Herrera has been completed this month on the eastern-facing wall of Manhattan East School for Arts and Academics, New York. Inspired by Herrera's 1987 painting Diagonal, this new 17 x 54ft mural entitled Uno, Dos, Tres, was painted in collaboration with middle and high school students at Publicolor as part of their Community Museum initiative. The organisation is a youth development program that engages high-risk, low-income students by teaching them the marketable skill of commercial painting and design.

On the mural's prominent position, facing a highway, parking lot and playground and visible from the nearby FDR Drive, Herrera noted in an interview with the New York Times, “It needed something strong and bold and different to compete with all the visual noise".
