Anish Kapoor to exhibit at Gallerie dell'Accademia at Venice Biennale 2021
21 March 2020Following the major exhibitions dedicated to Philip Guston in 2017 and to Georg Baselitz in 2019, the Gallerie dell'Accademia will re-open their doors to contemporary art in conjunction with the 2021 Art Biennale. This objective, which is now becoming a tradition, aims to establish an even closer dialogue with the city and its most important events, to offer the public an ever wider and more interesting experience, and above all to relate to the origins of the museum. When they were founded about two centuries ago, animated by the extraordinary cultural dynamism of Leopoldo Cicognara and Antonio Canova, the Gallerie aimed to enhance the artistic production of the time alongside the ancient masterpieces in its collection.
The Director of the Gallerie, Giulio Manieri Elia, is pleased to announce a large exhibition dedicated to Anish Kapoor, one of the most celebrated international artists. Anish Kapoor will be the first British artist to be honoured with a major exhibition at the Gallerie dell’ Accademia in Venice which will be presented during the Venice Biennale 2021. The exhibition will open on 3rd May and run until 3rd October 2021.
The curator of the exhibition is art historian Taco Dibbits, Director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The exhibition centres around Kapoor’s exploration of pigment sculptures from the late 70’s and early 80’s, Void sculptures from the 90's, mirror works from the 90's and 2000's and new works using Kapoor Black, the blackest material in the universe. The exhibition looks to explore the 35 years of Kapoor's involvement with sculpture and the immaterial.
