‘Ryan Gander and John Akomfrah: Centred on the Periphery’ at Chester Contemporary, England
Curated by Chester-born artist Ryan Gander, the upcoming visual arts event is set to be a ‘walking biennial’, featuring the works of internationally-renowned and Chester-based contemporary artists, alongside emerging visual artists. The event will also include creative engagement programmes with local communities and schools.
As part of a larger initiative led by Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Contemporary seeks to revitalise the visual arts scene in Chester, establishing the city as a hub for bold and ambitious visual art and artists. The event is set to explore how places at the periphery, often overlooked by the mainstream, can become the primary focus. It aims to offer visitors a fresh perspective on the city of Chester, unveiling a unique and exclusive creative energy using playful interventions and provocative work found within the city.
The confirmed participating artists are: John Akomfrah, Fiona Banner, Simeon Barclay, Jacq Bebb, Fischli Weiss, Tim Foxon, Ryan Gander, Hannah Perry, and Elizabeth Price.
Chester Contemporary will run from 22 September 2023 to 1 December 2023.
