Santiago Sierra
NO
2009Description
This edition relates to the performance of 'NO' during 2009. Staged internationally, this consisted of three touring trucks carrying an outsized three-dimensional sign of the exclamatory statement 'NO.' The project was initially conceived in relation to coffins travelling across America, and as a reference to the 'death trade' that America imposes on other countries for the glory and gain of weapons and oil industries. The piece also references ideas of fear, questioning whether it is fear itself that upholds our laws and democracies. When the work was first envisaged Santiago had wanted the touring truck to contain black coffins that may have aided this spread of 'fear'. This in turn gave way to a 'NO', which he hopes will be a contagious anti-slogan. It is a NO to absurd regimes, and a NO to the headquarters of reality that govern the country.
