Max Neuhaus
Artist Cv
Max Neuhaus was a renowned interpreter of contemporary music while still in his twenties. In the early sixties, he gave solo recitals in Carnegie Hall and toured America and Europe as a percussion soloist.
He extended his range of sound by inventing several early electro-acoustic instruments and his solo album recorded for Columbia Masterworks in 1968 stands as one of the first examples of what is now called live electronic music.
Neuhaus went on to pioneer artistic activities outside conventional cultural contexts and began to make sound works that were neither music nor events. He coined the term 'sound installation' to describe some of them.
Neuhaus founded these works on the premise that our sense of space depends on what we hear, as well as on what we see, utilizing given contexts as foundations to build new perceptions of place with sound alone. With the realization of these non-visual artworks for museums in America and Europe, he became the first to extend sound as a primary medium into the field of contemporary art. Over the last four decades he has created a large number of sound works for various environments, originated concepts of aural urban design as well as continuing his activities in music with Networks and Broadcast Works, virtual architectures which act as open forums for the evolution of new musics.
Max Neuhaus lives and works in Marina di Maratea, Italy.
