Juliao Sarmento

Artist Cv

Julião Sarmento is one of the most prolific and important contemporary Portuguese artists. Since 1974, he has been exploring the possibilities of different languages, such as photography, Super 8 film, performance, installation and painting. Throughout his practice, the female body has been a central theme, a provocative object of desire that activates the spectator in a voyeuristic and challenging encounter. This voyeuristic stance is often reinforced by the simple and impersonal rendition of the models, reduced to their bodily features, their silhouettes or close-ups. What we can see is at least as important as what is precluded to our vision and lies behind an immediate understanding. Desire and intimacy are balanced by a sense of distance and estrangement, while presence and memory, here and there, are constantly bridged, without ever touching.

Juliao Sarmento lives and works in Estoril, Portugal.
