Avis Newman
Artist Cv
Drawing lies at the core of Avis Newman's practice. Over the course of three decades, the artist has worked in a variety of formats and is mainly associated with abstract compositions. Avis Newman is particularly interested in systems of symbolic codification, signs for which the interpretative key might be lost. What emerges is the gesture, the act of making a mark on a page or canvas, which translates as an affirmation of consciousness of the subject. The gesture has a spiritual investment, the thought and movement preceding the moment in which the trace is materially produced. Similarly, her works assume a temporal dimension, as it exists in a process of articulation within the image where each mark in its materiality and its accumulative or transformative nature opens up an almost cinematic time in relation to the blank surface, and in the differential scale of a series of works.
Avis Newman lives and works in London.
